Oakley Flight Deck goggles with PRIZM lens technology
In 2014, Oakley introduced the Flight Deck goggle with PRIZM lens technology. We loved him and the press wrote rave reviews. The Flight Deck ski goggles are inspired by helmet visors worn by combat pilots; The ultimate goal for Oakley was to offer the widest field of vision while remaining fully compatible with the helmet. We found that they hit the nail on the head.
The Oakley Flight Deck goggle with PRIZM lens.
The large size of the frame and the sleek, rimless design provide a field of vision that we believe is unparalleled. We have tested the Flight Deck with helmets from more than a dozen manufacturers, and we can safely say that it would be difficult to find a helmet that does not fit seamlessly with these glasses. The extra bonuses are plentiful. We love the catchy, astronaut-like look. Despite the oversized look, this goggle fits very well on small and medium-sized faces. We often recommend the Flight Deck to people who wear prescription glasses; the frame and the foam fit well over most glasses and the lens is far enough away from the face so that you do not have to experience "inappropriate grinding" between the glasses and the lens. In addition, discrete notches in the frame are specifically designed to be compatible with most RX glasses frames.
Not to mention, the face foam is mighty plush, which ensures long, comfortable days on the hill. The foam mentioned is also highly skilled in moisture drains. We do not suffer from fog with these glasses, except in rare cases where the mouth and nose are covered with a face mask and the heartbeat goes through the roof.
And then there is PRIZM technology.
In a nutshell, PRIZM provides increased contrast and color, and with it, extreme optical pleasure. In more technical terms, PRIZM enhances contrast by emphasizing certain wavelengths in the color spectrum. We like to compare this technology with an equalizer on a stereo system; in the same way that one can crank the bass while enjoying a hip-hop track, PRIZM breaks the light into individual colors and amplifies certain colors while the other filters out. As a PRIZM user, you will see an improvement in the contours, details and definition of snow environments. This allows you to see more clearly, respond faster and drive with more confidence.
Many ski goggles manufacturers produce their own lens technology. Spy's Happy Lens, Dragon's Lumens and Smith's ChromaPop are just a few examples. These variations are all fantastic in themselves and are worth exploring. We have a lot of what has been tried and Oakley's PRIZM remains the go-to.
Regarding the different PRIZM shades, we have tested the Sapphire Iridium (blue, top), Torch Iridium (red, bottom), Rose and HI Pink (pink, bottom). Both Sapphire Iridium and Torch Iridium (11 - 20% VLT) work beautifully in both sunny and cloudy conditions. We cannot emphasize that enough: you can use this lens on the brightest days and also on a crumbly, super-gray day. When the light is ultra-light, Rose PRIZM (21% + VLT) has you covered, while offering sufficient versatility. HI Pink (approximately 25% VLT) can be switched on when you encounter the worst fog.
Candidly, the Flight Deck's gasket-like Ridgelock lens exchange system is not the most user-friendly. But if you work with Sapphire or Torch Iridium PRIZM lenses (I especially recommend these), you simply never have to change lenses again. All concerns about the versatility of these lenses must be thrown away.
All in all, the peripheral vision in combination with the boost in contrast and color will open your world and give you confidence while skiing. What else do you want from ski goggles?
